What they don't often see is everything that happened before that microscope ever arrived in their practice. Every Global Surgical A-Series microscope begins as raw materials inside our manufacturing facility in St. Louis, Missouri. From aluminum and stainless steel to precision-machined components and hand assembly, each microscope is built through a process that has been refined for more than three decades. In our latest "How It's Built" video, members of the Global Surgical manufacturing team take viewers behind the scenes to show what it takes to build one of the only dental microscopes manufactured entirely in the United States. ## It Starts With Raw Materials According to Jim Munzlinger, one of the most rewarding parts of working at Global Surgical is watching raw materials become a finished microscope. What begins as a simple bar of aluminum or stainless steel is transformed through machining, finishing, assembly, and inspection into a precision instrument trusted by dentists around the world. "It's kind of amazing to see how you had just a round bar of stainless steel and to see how that transformed into the final product." For the people building these microscopes every day, that transformation never gets old. ## Manufacturing Under One Roof Unlike many microscope manufacturers that rely heavily on overseas production, Global Surgical manufactures and assembles the majority of its components in-house. That means much of the process—from machining parts to painting, anodizing, assembly, and final inspection—takes place within the company's St. Louis facility. According to Dan Arbuti, maintaining control over the manufacturing process allows the team to consistently produce the level of quality customers expect. The process follows each component through multiple stages: - Raw aluminum and stainless steel arrive at the facility. - Components are precision machined. - Parts are anodized or painted. - Assemblers carefully build each microscope. - Every system is inspected and aligned before shipping. Because the team oversees nearly every step, quality isn't something checked only at the end—it's built into the process from the very beginning. ## Hand-Assembled With Purpose Automation plays an important role in modern manufacturing, but building a premium microscope still depends on skilled hands and experienced craftsmanship. Every Global Surgical microscope is assembled by technicians who understand how each component contributes to the performance of the finished system. That experience matters. Many members of the Global Surgical team have spent decades building microscopes, creating a level of consistency that's difficult to achieve through automation alone. The result is a product that reflects the pride and expertise of the people behind it. ## Precision Beyond the Specifications Manufacturing drawings include tolerances—the acceptable range within which a component can vary while still functioning properly. At Global Surgical, those tolerances aren't viewed as a target. They're viewed as a limit. As Arbuti explains, the team strives for perfect alignment throughout the microscope, from the optical head to the binoculars and video adapters. "We have tolerances built in, but we don't use those tolerances. We try to make everything absolutely perfect when it comes to the alignment of the scope." That pursuit of precision is one reason Global Surgical microscopes have earned a reputation for exceptional optical performance and long-term reliability. ## Built to Perform for Decades A microscope is one of the most significant equipment investments many dentists will make.
